Millions of people around the world are affected by back pain. These back pains are caused by:
• Trauma
• Injuries
• Inappropriate bending and lifting
• Disease
Though back pain is common, some people suffer from it for only a few months, and then it is no more, never to return again. In the consideration of back pain, the first body parts to be looked at must be muscles and nerves, and particle muscle diseases.
Muscles, Body Motion and Back Pain
The muscles provide strength to move, by exerting pressure or force on the bones to move. They are the mechanism of locomotion and are affected by the actions we take and even by gravity. In the performance of asymmetrical actions, the muscles are supported to a degree by the spinal column. The strain on the spinal column may cause back pain. However it is the muscles that create movement and enable lifting and pulling together with standing, walking, running swimming etc.
Actual movement is achieved by the contraction of the muscles. This means that the muscles shrink and expand, tighten and narrow. They absorb shock, and release pressure, or tension. The muscles control our actions and actually allow us to sit, walk, etc.
Walking makes the heel hit the ground, and explains heel pain that may occur at some stage in our lives and may be extended into back pain. The body weight is placed on the heel, which the muscles then reacts to be allowing the remaining foot to drop to the ground, and then bending the knee to continue on.
The Spine, Nerves and Back Pain
The spinal column assists the muscles in many ways. The spine consists of neurons, or nerves, which assist and aid sensory and motor skills. The nerves that affect motor skills emerge in muscles activities. To be exact, motor nerves are supported by the voluntary of the muscles and cause body motion. The nerves transmit impulses from the brain to the spinal cord, and then onto glands and muscles. Motion is action enforced by motor nerves.
Sensory nerves, relate to sense organs and sensation and are sued heighten awareness and aid communication to the joints. These nerves continue sending messages down to the muscles and from the muscles it travels to the organs and even the blood vessels, up to the skin and then back to cranium, thus controlling feelings and senses.
A combination of motor impulses and sensory messages control the motor unit which is made of the fibers that are the nerves and muscles. The motor unit also refers to the motor neuron acting on muscle and nerve fibers.
Back pain is sometimes caused by muscle spasms, which themselves begin by interruption of joint action by these fibers. At this point muscles begin involuntary actions, usual the tightening and contraction of muscles, causing extreme weakness or even paralysis.
The incorrect functioning of muscles and fibers, that is, not enough contractions, or too many contractions, causes back pain.
