Osteomyelitis, Bone Diseases and Back Pain

Osteomyelitis is a bone disease which causes inflammation of the bone and the bone marrow, and is caused by infections. The condition can cause severe back pain. Osteomyelitis can also begin with Laminectomy which is a surgical procedure.

Infection and Back Pain

Laminectomy may give rise to complications and the patient may experience sensory and motor defects, infection and paralytic ileus, urine retention and muscle spasms. These themselves can cause back pain, and will eventually cause Osteomyelitis.

Spinal fusion is also a type of surgical procedure that can lead to infection and Osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis is in reality a bacterial infection of the soft tissues and the bones. Apart from surgical procedures, open trauma, staphylococcus aureus, infection, and hemolytic streptococcus are other causes of Osteomyelitis.

Infections occur when organisms reach the bones from open wounds or through the blood stream. These infections cause destruction as well as bone fragmentation, and the dying of tissues that kills the cells in the organs and results from disease. New bone may begin to form spreading over "the sequestrum" and if it occurs during the healing phase, there will be non-union causing extreme back pain.

Other Causes of Back Pain

Malaise, the process of muscles being compressed or depressed may cause infections leading to Osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis may also be caused by extreme body temperatures, bone and back pain and increases of pain by movement, localized edema and redness, tachycardia and muscle spasms.  Edema and tachycardia, tachycardia being very rapid heart beat, can also cause back pain.

Treating the Problems Related to Back Pain

The search begins for positive organisms, which can be identified in the blood and wound cultures. Doctors will use ESR, and WBC tests, which are Hematological. Bone scans can be used too. In a review of Osteomyelitis, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Gouty arthritis, Osteogenic Sarcoma and such related and similar diseases must be ruled out.

The presence of Osteomyelitis will cause management and intervention treatment, comprising such as diet changes, bed rest and increased fluid intake.

Medical management includes heat treatment, high-calorie diets, vitamins C and D, protein, and high-calcium diets. Monitoring and testing of the patient continues and nutritional support given together with special wound and skin care.

Antibiotics, namely Cipro or Ciprofloxacin, will be recommended. Tylox or oxycodone, an analgesic, could be also suggested. Splints may be needed. Intervention action may be use to reduce the potential risks of bone necrosis, sepsis, and very possible fractures.

Surgery might be necessary.  These surgical interventions are created to avoid operations and include bone grafting, bone segment transferring, incisions and drainage of abscess bones and sequestrectomy.

Home care maybe recommended and instructions usually include distance from others with infections, and avoidance of exercises that put too much on the weight bearing joints. This alone will avoid the exacerbation of back pain. Self-monitoring of infection and noting of signals of fractures are instructed.

Skin care to eliminate damage and shifting positions while resting will be other recommendations. Every routine and treatments is ordered in the presence of Osteomyelitis and following them is suggested to avoid back pain.
